Many of the “green boxes” seen in the front yards of various neighborhoods across the United States have a purpose. The purpose of these green boxes is to “house” the primary or secondary electrical cables that bring electricity to our homes and businesses. The big light green cabinet shown on the left of the top picture houses underground cables that transition themselves from the riser pole’s overhead wires to underground primary cables. These underground primary cables are trenched below the ground surface and are fed underneath the cabinet’s flange. Once inside the sectionalizing cabinet, electrical elbows are attached to the under ground cable as seen on the picture to the left. The elbows plug into an electrical junction that is attached to a mounting plate inside the cabinet. From here the underground cables are trenched to either a transformer as seen on the picture to the right or to another sectionalizing cabinet. From a single phase transformer, secondary cables are trenched underneath the ground to a secondary pedestal as seen at the lower left picture. The pedestal will house normally three 6 way connectors. From the pedestal’s connectors, three wires will be trenched to the city’s or utilities’s meter and finally wired into the home or business electrical panel. Please check with your local utility code for cable burying depths and underground electrical distribution codes.
